Safeguarding Youth: Algorithm Safety and Education
95% of youth between the ages of 13-17 use social media “almost constantly” in the United States. Adolescents’ perpetual engagement with algorithmically curated content on social media exposes minors to harmful information that negatively impacts their mental wellbeing at a rate proportional to engagement. There is a pressing need to regulate algorithms and use their existing capabilities to better identify and protect minors from harmful content on social media. To effectively mitigate algorithm misuse, it is crucial to develop a comprehensive understanding of the algorithm's functioning. To achieve this, we plan to conduct an experiment where we will assume the identity of a 13-year-old male and female adolescent. The goal being to discern the patterns of content presentations targeted towards this demographic on Meta platforms.
